COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Programs

Last April our team put together a COVID-19 State Assistance Guide with different state programs and loans that have been introduced to help landlords, homeowners, and individual tenants to get through the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we want share another great resource that the National Low Income Housing Coalition has put together for you.

NLIHC created a spreadsheet to track information on rental assistance programs that different cities and states are working on or have expanded in order to support individuals and families who were impacted by the pandemic.

The list may not bet complete, as it is being updated frequently, but is a great place to start if you’re looking for financial assistance.

MY PARENTS WHO ARE IN THEIR early 90’S LIVE IN BLOOMINGBURG, NEW YORK (SULLIVAN COUNTY). THEY HAVE HUGE PROPERTY TAXES. THEY HAVE SEVERAL RENTALS THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO DEPEND ON IN THE PAST TO HELP PAY TAXES ,ELECTRIC , GAS, OIL, AND REPAIRS. Now they have to pay all these bills which were included in the tenants rents. MOST TENANTS HAVE PAID THEM NOTHING FOR MORE THAN A YEAR AND DO NOT BOTHER TO FILL OUT DOCUMENTS AND COULD CARE LESS. IS THERE ANY REAL HELP FOR THEM? ONE OF THEIR PAYING TENANTS JUST MOVED OUT AFTER ONLY HALF A YEAR. IT IS TERRIBLE THAT THEY COULD LOSE EVERYTHING BY ORDER OF THE STATES NO EVICTION POLICY WHICH DOESN’T GIVE THEM ANY RIGHTS. I EXPECT THE STATE AND OR COUNTY WILL NOT CARE AS THEY TAKE THEIR PROPERTY FROM THEM. —-WHAT PROGRAMS ARE THERE IN SULLIVAN COUNTY NEW YORK TO ASSIST THEM? MOST PROGRAMS ARE TOO COMPLICATED! THEY DO NOT NEED A LOAN WHICH WILL ONLY PUT THEM DEEPER IN DEBT. PROPERTY TAXES SHOULD BE FORGIVEN SINCE THEY COULD NOT COLLECT OR REMOVE TENANTS. HELP! I have no idea how to help!

My tenant here in Illinois finally informed me they were leaving after months of paying no rent or utilities. I then find out about the Rent Relief Program. I was going to apply for it but after reading all the restrictions and that the tenant had to be living in the house I could not. So how can a landlord in the same boat as I collect any relief. Are the courts the only option? This person was receiving housing assistance until I informed them in late 2020 that I was not renewing their lease due to lease violations and they had to vacate. At that point, their housing assistance stopped and they stopped paying any rent and did not leave. They finally vacated this month and left me with the mess. So where is our help?

Illinois have a Tenant that stoped paying rent after he found out that the money wasn’t going to him and he didn’t finish the relief forms. And he’s still living there says he’s going to finish paper work!
