South Carolina Housing will be providing approximately $5 million in emergency rental assistance to South Carolinians facing financial hardships as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible households could receive up to $1,500, with payments made directly to landlords or management companies. Relief will be provided as a one-time lump sum toward tenants’ rent payments.

ECCO provides emergency funds to ECCO clients. Our service area includes the following zip codes in Charleston and Berkeley counties. Clients may receive limited assistance with their utility bill or monthly rent or mortgage payment (depending on funding).

  • Charleston County Eviction Prevention Program

Charleston County is targeting renters on the verge of eviction with its next round of housing assistance, offering landlords cash if they drop cases against their tenants. Unlike traditional housing assistance that relies on renters to request help, the county’s new approach is to seek out their landlords directly. The county is putting nearly $1.8 million of federal stimulus money into the program, which officials expect to reach about 475 households. Funding will be limited to families who make less than 80 percent of the county’s median income; that’s about $57,000 per year, according to census data. Under federal rules, the county says payments will be capped at six months’ rent.

The United Way of Greenville County has partnered with the city of Greenville, Greenville County Redevelopment Authority, Greenville Housing Fund, SHARE and United Housing Connections to launch the Emergency Housing Assistance Fund. The organizations have collectively pledged more than $450,000 to support the fund. This fund will also receive $150,000 from the United Way of Greenville County’s COVID-19 Community Relief Fund and could potentially leverage another $7 million in federal housing funds for Greenville County.

Horry County has received  $622,221 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Emergency Solutions Grant program for rental assistance.
